구미시, AI 융합 제조 혁신으로 미래 도약

Gumi City is making a bold play to become a ‘Global Manufacturing AI Data City,’ fusing artificial intelligence and data infrastructure with its core semiconductor and defense industries. The city has laid out an ambitious roadmap to 2032: transform 10 manufacturing anchor companies with AI, cultivate 100 new AI-related firms, and train a 1,000-strong skilled workforce. To achieve this, a comprehensive plan featuring 26 distinct tasks across four key areas is now officially underway.

The vision, unveiled at a ceremony at GumiCo on February 25, drew significant attention from over 100 local business leaders, AI executives, and academics. This isn’t just about buzzwords; it’s Gumi’s direct answer to the high costs and talent shortages that cripple companies attempting to adopt AI. The plan aims for more than just productivity gains—it’s a calculated move to position Gumi as a leader in setting manufacturing data standards.

At the heart of this blueprint lies a powerful synergy between two new pillars: the ‘Manufacturing Innovation AI Complex’ and the ‘Hyper AI Data Cluster.’ The complex will serve as the collaboration hub for AI and manufacturing firms. Meanwhile, the data cluster will provide the essential digital backbone, combining high-performance computing tailored for manufacturing with a stable power and communications grid. Bolstering these efforts are two major projects: the ‘National Manufacturing AX Demonstration Complex,’ which will turn the entire Gumi Industrial Complex into a massive AI testbed, and the ‘Gumi-type MAX Foundation Model’ initiative to develop AI models customized for local industries.

A clear strategy is in place to maximize data utilization. The ‘Manufacturing AI Data Space’ and the ‘Industrial AI Data Processing Support Platform’ will standardize the entire data lifecycle, from collection to application, paving the way for secure data sharing between companies. To foster innovation, the city is also establishing the ‘Manufacturing AX Scale-up Field’ and the ‘Physical AI Startup Field.’ These will nurture groundbreaking companies in high-potential areas like robotics and autonomous manufacturing, while giving small and medium-sized enterprises a risk-free environment to test and adopt new AI technologies.

“The AI transformation is no longer an option—it’s a necessity,” declared Gumi Mayor Kim Jang-ho. He asserted his commitment to “transplanting an AI brain into our world-class manufacturing infrastructure to create the best city in Korea for business.” Following this declaration, Gumi will now go all-in on securing large-scale national AI projects while continuously developing practical, impactful support measures that businesses can feel on the ground.
