OpenAI, Com2uS Ignite New Era in AI Game Development

The artificial intelligence era in game development is rapidly accelerating. Former XLGames CEO Song Jae-kyung recently revealed that his solo-developed MMORPG, ‘OpenMMO,’ achieved a remarkable 24-fold increase in content production using OpenAI’s Codex, compared to the development of ‘Lineage.’ This statistic powerfully illustrates AI’s potential to fundamentally reshape the game development paradigm. The ‘OpenAI Game Builders Seoul’ hackathon, held in Seoul on August 31, highlighted the forefront of this transformative shift.

This collaboration between OpenAI and Com2uS marks the first global hackathon specifically focused on AI-driven game development. Under the theme, ‘Build with Codex, Play with Hive,’ 40 selected teams utilized OpenAI’s coding agent, Codex, to develop games and integrated them with Com2uS’s Hive backend platform. The event explicitly aimed to explore AI’s role across the entire game development lifecycle, from initial concept to actual service implementation.

From a technical standpoint, Codex serves as a crucial tool, supporting the entire software development process—including writing, modifying, and testing code—based on natural language instructions. Com2uS’s Hive platform offers essential game launch and operation features, such as login, payments, user analytics, and security, through AI plugins. Com2uS further unveiled ‘Hive Axyl,’ an AI-friendly development and operations platform slated for release in Q3 this year, designed to integrate seamlessly with Codex and provide end-to-end support from development to live operations. This platform directly addresses challenges faced by small and medium-sized developers, including compliance with international data protection regulations, payment system implementation, and enhanced security.

The market anticipates explosive growth in AI-driven game development. The global AI in gaming market, valued at an estimated USD 3,280.9 million in 2024, is projected to reach USD 51,259.3 million by 2033, exhibiting a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 36.1% from 2025 to 2033. Another forecast suggests a rise from USD 5.85 billion in 2024 to approximately USD 37.89 billion by 2034, with a CAGR of 20.54% from 2025 to 2034. This expansion is largely driven by the increasing application of AI technologies within the game development and design segments. A Google Cloud survey indicates that 90% of developers are already incorporating generative AI into their workflows, accelerating development cycles and automating repetitive tasks like code generation. Com2uS itself actively integrates AI into its game services, notably with the ‘AI Mode’ in its recently launched ‘ZEUS: God of Arrogance,’ allowing character progression even when players are offline.
