SK Hynix Mulls US Front-End Fab; AI Memory War Escalates

AI Demand Surge Propels HBM Market Towards $34 Billion by 2026

The burgeoning demand for artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly expanding the High-Bandwidth Memory (HBM) market, creating unprecedented growth. HBM revenue is projected to nearly double to approximately $34 billion in 2025, poised to exceed 50% of the total DRAM market by 2030. Amidst this structural shift, SK Hynix is signaling the potential for a front-end semiconductor fabrication plant in the United States, beyond its existing advanced packaging facility, setting the stage for an intensified global memory competition.

SK Hynix is already investing $3.87 billion in West Lafayette, Indiana, to construct an advanced packaging and R&D facility for AI-specific HBM products. This facility aims for mass production in the second half of 2028, bolstered by up to $458 million in direct funding and $500 million in loans from the US CHIPS and Science Act. This strategic move aligns with national efforts to fortify the US AI supply chain and reduce dependency on foreign sources.

Chairman Choi Tae-won’s Warning: An Impending ‘Memory War’

SK Group Chairman Choi Tae-won recently equated the race for AI memory to a ‘war,’ cautioning that next year (2027) will witness the most severe memory shortage. Customers are requesting almost double the memory volume for next year compared to current levels, yet manufacturers lack sufficient additional capacity. With AI data centers expected to consume up to 70% of all high-end memory in 2026, the supply of conventional DRAM and NAND flash will inevitably tighten further. The production of a single HBM wafer displaces two or more conventional DRAM wafers, resulting in a net reduction of overall memory bit supply.

This supply-demand imbalance risks triggering ‘chipflation,’ where soaring memory prices translate into higher costs for finished products. DRAM prices are estimated to have risen over 400% from early 2024 to the end of 2026. To address this burgeoning demand, SK Hynix plans to double its production capacity over the next five years, projecting that within a decade, the required memory production capacity will be five times current levels.

US Front-End Fab: A Pivotal Strategic Decision

Chairman Choi’s openness to constructing a front-end fab in the US, beyond the Indiana packaging plant, signifies a strategic decision with profound implications. The US government has publicly urged Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix to establish memory production facilities domestically. This pressure reflects a strong US commitment to managing geopolitical risks and establishing a robust advanced semiconductor supply chain. However, building a front-end fab demands not only massive initial capital investment but also critical infrastructure, including stable power, water, a skilled workforce, and a mature semiconductor ecosystem.

Competitors are also making aggressive moves. Micron announced plans for a total investment of $150 billion, including two large-scale memory wafer factories in Idaho and an industrial park in New York. While SK Hynix currently leads the HBM market with a 58% share by revenue in Q1 2026, Samsung, as the first supplier of HBM4 to NVIDIA, is expected to gradually expand its market share. Furthermore, China’s CXMT is actively pursuing DRAM capacity expansion, further complicating the competitive landscape.

The AI memory market will be a battleground for technological leadership and capacity acquisition in the coming years. SK Hynix’s potential US front-end fab could serve as a critical catalyst for global semiconductor supply chain restructuring, extending beyond mere corporate investment.
